The Kolayat Fair in Kolayat and in Bikaner is called the Kapil Muni Mela and is the largest fair of Bikaner (Rajasthan). It is Celebrated on Kartik Purnima at Kolayat, this fair is observed on the banks of the Kolayat Lake. Devotees who come here for the festivities, bathe in the lake on the day of the festival.
The celebrations of Kolayat Fair hold a special significance for the local people. The name was assigned to the place after Kapil Muni Maharaj, this name is also found in the holy scripture of Puranas.
A special mention should be made of the 52 Ghats on the banks of the Kolayat Lake. All these Ghats are very beautifully decorated with lights on the day of the festival. People do their prayers on the banks of the lake. Different types of sweets are made in the Kolayat Temple. The most remarkable feature of the Kolayat Mela of Bikaner is when all the devotees gather at one point at dusk and put several deep oil lamps on the leaves.
