FESTIVALS OF INDIA – POUSH MELA

Poush Mela or Poush Fair is the festival of Bengal, that takes place in Shantiniketan, it is also the Annual Fair of the Bengalies. It is celebrated in the Birbhum District of the Indian state of West Bengal, marking the harvest season. Commencing on the seventh day of the month (Poush), officially the Poush Mela lasts for three days, the key characteristic of this Fair include live performances of Bengali artists like the folk music, baul music and it also includes folk songs, dances and tribal sports and other performance also.

This fair offers a perfect insight of the heritage of the state. The students of Shantiniketan present their performance and make the festival more enjoyable and glamorous. The entire festival is filled with different events. The last day of the Push Mela is devoted to those persons who are related to Shantiniketan.

A small fair was organised in 1894 named Push Mela in connection with the establishment anniversary of the Brahma mandir. Today, this fair is an attraction for many people of Birbhum district and also tourists from all around.
