Mahalakshmi Vrata



Mahalakshmi Vrata or Varalaksmi Vratha in Hinduism is a ceremony performed by married Hindu ladies on the Friday before the full moon in the month of Sravana in the Hindu Calendar in July/August. It can be done on any other Friday in that month. This is an important Vratha For all married ladies, Varamahalakshmi Vratha is performed more commonly in the southern Indian States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra and Orissa are also the part of this Maha lakshmi vrata.


On the day of Varalakshmi vrata, women clean their homes,decorate their front yards with rangolis. Later, and after they deck themselves with beautiful clothes and jewellery. Then they start the process of performing the vrata by first arranging the kalash(sacred pot). They fill the pot with rice and water,which symbolizes prosperity and cover it with mango Leaves and betel leaves. They then place a coconut smeared with turmeric and vermilion on the kalasha and also decorate the coconut with a new cloth. And Doing pooja With collectively sing songs of goddess Varalakshmi.

Puja is performed Mainly for three days and different kind of food and varity of pakvan(Snacks) are made by married Hindu women to seek the blessings of the Devi Mahalakshmi, wife of Lord Vishnu.
