Yakshagana consists of a himmela ‘background music group’ and a mummela ‘dance with dialog group’ which together perform Yakshagana poetry. Himmela consist of a bhagawata ‘singer’ who is also the director maddale, harmonium for drone (pungi was used earlier) and chande (loud drums).
