MONUMENTS OF INDIA -HUMAYUN TOMB

Humayun’s tomb or Humayun ka Maqbara, is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. In 1562 CE the tomb was commissioned by his wife Hamida Bano Begum, and designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyath, a Persian architect. It was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It is located in Nizamuddin in Delhi (India), and close to the Dina-panah citadel also called as Purana Qila, that Humayun founded in 1533.

The domb was chosen on the banks of Yamuna river, due to its proximity to Nizamuddin Dargah, the muslim of the celebrated Sufi saint of (Delhi). In Mughal history, the Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zaffar took refuge here, during the 1857 Indian Rebellion, along with three princes, and he was captured by Captain Hodson before being exiled to Rangoon place. The Tomb also has the Char Bagh garden, Baber’s Tomb.

The domb represents the Mughal architecture, with its accomplished Charbagh garden, typical of Persian gardens, which had never been seen before in India. It is seen as a clear departure from the fairly modest muslim of his father, the first Mughal Emperor, Babur, called Bagh-e Babur in Kabul.
