PAINTINGS OF INDIA – PHAD PAINTINGS
Phad painting is a popular style of folk painting. This painting is mostly made in the Rajasthan state of India. This style of painting is made traditionally and done on a long cloth, called as phad. The Phad narrates the folk deities of Rajasthan State, and mostly of Pabuji and Devnarayan are depicted on the phads.
The main artists of these paintings in Rajisthan are Joshi families (Bhilwaras) ,Bhilwara district of Rajasthan is most widely known for the traditional artists of this folk art work for the last two centuries. Presently, Shree Lal Joshi, Nand Kishor Joshi , Prakash Joshi and Shanti Lal Joshi are the most popular artists of the phad painting, who are known for their innovations and creativity.
The phads of Pabuji are normally about 15 feet long in length, while the phads of Devnarayan are normally about 30 feet long in length. Traditionally the phads are painted with vegetable colors, green being a very common color used in this painting.
