PAINTINGS OF INDIA – RAJPUT PAINTINGS
The Rajput Painting is a very beautiful style of Indian painting. They evolved and flourished in the 18th century, in the royal courts of Rajputs (Rajputana), India. Rajput paintings depict a number of themes, images of events like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata,Geeta, Krishna’s lifes beautiful landscapes, gardens and human beings. Many manuscripts also contain Rajput Paintings.
Certain features distinguish these paintings from the other style of Indian paintings. They reflect a strong Mughal influence. They were made on walls of palaces and also on inner chambers of forts and havelis. Since the time those paintings originated, certain schools also emerged namely Bikaner School, Bundi-Kota Kalam School, Jaipur School, Kishengarh School, Marwar School, Mewar School and Raagamala School.
The colours were extracted from certain minerals, plant sources, conch shells, and were even derived by processing precious stones, gold an silver were also used. The preparation was also important for the design of those paintings and making desired colours was a lengthy process. Brushes used were very fine.
