Meenakshi Temple, also Called as Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple, is a historic Hindu temple located in the holy city Madurai in India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiv ji, who is known here as Sundareswarar or Beautiful Lord and his consort, Parvati is named as Meenakshi.
The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old Madurai city. It has a very complex architecture, it houses 14 magnificent Gopurams or towers including two golden Gopurams for the main deities, that are sculptured and painted showing the architectural and sculpting skills of the ancient Indian sthapathis. The Temple has a great significance in the Tamil Culture.
The Temple is the geographic center of the of Madurai city. The temple walls, and streets and finally the city walls (very ancient) were built around the temple in squares. Ancient Tamil classics mention that the temple was the center of the city and the streets happened to be radiating out like the lotus and petals.
