INDIAN THEATRE
THEATRE OF INDIA
India has a culture of Theatre for various years. Performing artists had been a great part of it, with a wide audience from India as well as other parts of the world. The earliest form of theatre had been Sanskrit Theatre, before the development of Greek and Roman Theatre.
The major source of evidence for Sanskrit theatre is A Treatise on Theatre (Natyashastra), a compendium whose date of composition is uncertain (estimates range from 200 BCE to 200 CE) and whose authorship is attributed to Bharata Muni. The most noticeable theatre art are the three famous plays written by Kalidasa namely – Malvika and Agnimitra, The Recognition of Shakuntala and a play pertaining to Vikrama and Urvashi.
While most modern theatre companies rehearse one piece of theatre at a time, perform that piece for a set “run”, retire the piece, and begin rehearsing a new show, repertory companies rehearse multiple shows at one time. These companies are able to perform these various pieces upon request and often perform works for years before retiring them. Most dance companies operate on this repertory system.
