FESTIVALS OF INDIA – BHAIDOOJ
The Bhai Dooj or Bhau beej is an Indian Festival of Brothers and Sisters. It is celebrated by Hindus on the End day of the five day Diwali festival.
The festival is also known as the Bhai Bij, Bhau-beej or Bhav Bij amongst the Marathi communities in the states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Bhai Tika as also called in Nepal, other names are Bhai Dooj, Bhathru Dwithiya and Bhatri Ditya. Here the first word Bhai (Brother), and the second word Dooj means the second day after the new moon.
This Festival is Celebrated is the second day of the bright fortnight or Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month Kartika. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers to have long and happy lives by performing the Tilak (Teeka ceremony), and brothers give gifts to their sisters.
