Vivekananda Rock
MONUMENTS OF INDIA – VIVEKANANDA ROCK
The Vivekananda Rock is a sacred monument and a popular tourist attraction place located in Vavathurai, in Kanyakumari (India). The Vivekanada memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters off mainland of Vavathurai. It was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Committee in honour of the visit of the great spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda ji to Shripada Parai during the December month in 1892 for deep meditation. He swam to this rock and meditated about the past, present and future of India.
A meditation hall or Dhyana Mandapam is also attached for the visitors to meditate here. And the design of the mandapa incorporates different styles of temples from all over India. It houses a statue of Vivekananda ji. The three seas – Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean can be seen from these rocks. The Vivekananda Mandapam has erected in honour of Vivekananda and consists of Dhyana Mandapam, Sabha Mandapam, Mukha Mandapam.
The Shripada Mandapam is also present there, this hall consists of the following structures : Garbha Graham, Inner Prakaram, and Outer Prakaram, both the Mandapams are so designed that the vision of Vivekananda ji in the statue would be seen direct towards the Shripada Mandapam.
